Position Summary:
Maine Maritime Museum in Bath is seeking an experienced boatbuilding instructor to lead its longest-running educational program, Discovery Boatbuilding. Spanning over two decades, this ground-breaking program provides traditional skills education to students from four schools each week throughout the school year. Discovery Boatbuilding puts students in a working environment that emphasizes and develops each student’s personal growth, teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and problem solving.
This part-time, year-round position works with the Director of Watercraft to develop and teach the museum’s Discovery Boatbuilding Program, a nine-month comprehensive traditional boatbuilding class for area middle school students. The educator will use and expand upon the curriculum developed over the previous 26 years to teach basic woodworking and boatbuilding four days a week to between 10-15 students per day. The boatbuilding educator will manage and direct museum volunteers who assist with the classes, and will oversee volunteer material preparation for the program. The educator will also lead short adult classes spread throughout the year in boatbuilding techniques and other woodworking concepts, and participate in the woodworking components of museum summer camps.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Boatbuilding instructor and teacher for the Discovery Boatbuilding Program
• Work with students in grades 5-8 to teach woodworking, boatbuilding, teamwork, and resiliency
• Develops and implements the curriculum, including weekly notes and weekly student homework
• Plans and collaborates with attending schools on end-of-year boat launches and celebrations
• Manages a group of 30+ volunteers to assist during class time, and to prepare materials during non-class hours
• Instructor for adult classes
• Develop and expand upon the museum’s current adult class offerings of basic woodworking projects
• Work with and bring in local experts to expand the scope and diversity of boatshop programming
• Summer camp instruction
• Work with established MMM summer camps when needed to instruct in basic woodworking and boatbuilding skills
Required Skills
• Experience as a wooden boatbuilder with a focus on traditional methods and materials
• Experience instructing others in wooden boatbuilding, with a strong desire to teach young people

• Maritime history knowledge is useful

Position Summary: Systems Tech


Systems Technicians troubleshoot, repair and install systems on boats ranging from 30-60’. These systems include: DC Electrical Charging & Distribution, AC Electrical, Engines, Generators, Water Makers, Navigation Electronics, Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Heating, Communications and more.

Safe Harbor Great Island Systems Technicians will be trained through a combination of mentoring, ABYC courses and OEM Product Training to develop their knowledge of: maintenance procedures; installation application requirements and troubleshooting using both computer interfaces and diagnostic equipment such as multi-meters, refrigeration gauge sets, and product specific tooling.

Systems Technicians execute annual decommissioning and recommissioning procedures on the vessels stored at Safe Harbor Great Island. These procedures are IPad base and guide the technician through the process while capturing critical data for the customer.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Execute boat commissioning and decommissioning procedures.
Utilize diagnostic equipment and Computer Interfaces to troubleshoot boat systems and components.
Repair, replace, and install new vessel systems and components.
Evaluate repair and installation jobs and prepare estimated for hours and materials.
Must possess own tools.
Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines.



Technical and Physical Requirements

Our signature learn-to-sail classes are taught in the cove while more advanced waterfront classes are taught on the ocean. KBIA’s fleet is comprised of Optis, Lasers, 420s and two Precision sailboats. Support vessels include multiple outboard Boston Whalers and a Rib Craft. We offer flexibility, a competitive salary, the chance to live in a classic New England beach community that is within 90 minutes of Boston and 35 minutes to Portland.

KBIA is hiring a USGC captain to join our vibrant waterfront team for summer 2022.

● The position is summer seasonal. KBIA is a M-F day camp day camp, open for eight weeks starting on June 27th with staff orientation the weekend prior.
● The position is part-time. Classes are scheduled 5 days per week at high tides only (approximately 2 to five hours per day; the schedule is tide-dependent).
● The captain will teach children ages 11 and up how to safely operate a boat.
● The captain will run other programs (Critter Cruise and Island Picnic) that involve taking kids ages 9+ out on the water.

The ideal candidate is able to work prior to the start of classes getting the boats into the water and after the close of classes getting the boats stored for the winter, a minimum of 1 week before and one week following programming (June 18, 2022 - August 28, 2022).

The Racing Coach reports to the Waterfront Director and is supported by Counselors and Counselors in Training (CIT). The Racing Coach is responsible for the instruction, supervision and management of some combination of KBIA’s Race Team 1, Race Team 2 and the Opti Race Team and will be a significant leader in our sailing program. Both Race Team 1 and Opti Race Team classes send representatives to local weekly MIRC races and the coach will accompany them. Race Team 2 travels to larger, often multi day, regattas.
