DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Expertly troubleshoot, diagnose and repair marine engines, transmissions and drivetrains, generators, stabilizers, electrical systems and electronics and common marine mechanical systems such as potable water systems and sanitation systems.
• Planning and installation of the above-mentioned systems
• Accurately and efficiently estimate projects
• Perform all work to ABYC standards
• Inspect boats and create detailed list of issues, potential issues, or areas of non-conformity to ABYC standards, and create recommendations so that our customers can have a carefree boating experience.
• Recommend and perform routine preventative maintenance, including fall decommissioning and spring commissioning processes
• Sea trial boats
• Maintain detailed records to document all work completed
• Maintain leading-edge knowledge of all marine systems and technology and stay abreast of upcoming trends.
o Be willing to attend trainings and seek out opportunities for gaining knowledge
• Test and adjust systems to meet manufacturer’s performance specifications

Who We Are
The beginnings of the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-Op go back about 40 years. We are a full service boatyard with a talented crew, well-known for our traditional woodworking skills, from fine interior joinery on sail and motor yachts to major structural restoration on commercial fishing vessels. We design and install marine electronics and navigation systems, engines, propulsion, fuel and drive, heating, cooling, plumbing, steering, refrigeration and hydraulics, spars and rigging on steel, aluminum, fiberglass and wooden vessels. PTSC also specializes in new construction. Our business model is based on having cooperative owners manage our current staff of 40 plus employees, ensuring that each job has its own team of experts. In 2021, Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op acquired Carol Hasse’s sail loft, Port Townsend Sails.

What We Are Looking For
The Sailmaker is a valuable member of our experienced team of sailmakers and marine trade professionals. The typical tasks of a Sailmaker include preparing, selecting, measuring and cutting materials, sewing by hand and machine, and repairing existing sails. You will work in the sail loft of PT Sails at our facilities in the The Port Townsend Boatyard at the Port of Port Townsend.

Contributing to the success of the Sailmaker are attentive team work, detail orientation, speed, communication and collaboration skills, good eye-hand coordination, physical strength, mathematics including algebra and geometry, accuracy and patience, as well as comfort with manual and practical work.

What You Might Be Asked To Do
Prepare materials like creasing tapes, making sail ties, making labels
Practice sail making tasks like burning fabric, assembling patches, seaming samples, practicing sewing leathers, sewing rings
Remove and sew new covers, restitch seams, repair tears and conduct other sail repair tasks
Prepare materials for shipping, handle materials
Select and measure material, mark out and cut with scissors or power cutters
