NOLS hires new expedition instructors through a training process called an Instructor Course (IC). We will host a Baja Sailing IC from Jan 5-30, 2025. Applications are due Sept 13, 2024 and interviews will be Sept 30-Oct 3, 2024. Sail IC candidates who are accepted and successfully complete this course are considered ready to hire as a NOLS expedition instructor on a contractual basis.

Sailing instruction work is flexible - our Mexico sail instructors typically work 2-16 weeks on sailing expeditions/year (full travel paid) and instructors can go up to 3 years between trips and still be considered active. For most of our instructors, NOLS is a fun, exciting addition to other work. For those looking to work more weeks at NOLS, we have in-town, benefitted positions and offer free training pathways to current instructors for moving into other expedition skills like keelboat sailing, sea kayaking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and more. The Safe Harbor Savannah Yacht Center is a deep-water maintenance, repair and re-fit facility on the Savannah River in coastal Georgia, dedicated to servicing the mega-yacht industry. We are hiring a Project Engineer to support engineering and project management departments for shipyard operations and servicing of vessels. In this dynamic role, the candidate will be responsible for providing project management coordination to integrate the various departments to support work completion on multiple vessel’s during their shipyard maintenance period. Engineering support will be required for shipyard projects, facility upgrades, vessel refit/repairs, and dry docking.




Engineering duties will include but are not limited to estimates, proposals and drawings for repairs or fabrication projects, tracking change orders, vessel service reports, supporting skilled trades in completion of repairs and fabrication, dry docking calculations/docking plan drawings, structural evaluations, naval architectural calculations, facility upgrades, drawings and models as required. Project Management assistance to ensure that all projects run within scope, schedule, and budget constraints. Tracking of various departments tasks and status of work task completion.




The candidate will work in a supporting role where team members are responsible for estimating, coordinating, planning, managing, executing, and documenting all aspects of the vessel’s services are completed appropriately. The candidate will work with estimators, project management, engineering, skilled laborers, and upper management. Candidates should expect to routinely interface with customers, subcontractors, and support personnel. This role is ideal for an engineer with maritime experience in a fast-paced shipyard environment. • 2+ years engineering experience or practical knowledge of the project management discipline (through advanced education combined with experience).

Overall Responsibilities

Assist the Chief Engineer with the operation and maintenance of all vessel systems and machinery, in port and at sea. Of equal importance is teaching our students, and others as appropriate, in proper operation of the vessel. Maintains a professional student/teacher relationship, which fosters the education program and community on board. Serves aboard assigned SEA vessel for contract term, scheduled under the direction of the Director of Marine Operations.

Primary Tasks
Operate, monitor, maintain, and repair as needed all ships machinery under the direction of the Chief Engineer, including but not limited to:

Main Engine, reduction gears and CPP. Generators and AC and DC electrical distribution. RO Water Makers and potable water systems. Fuel oil transfer system, bunkering, and storage. MSD, vacuum toilets, and wastewater systems. Refrigeration systems. Safety equipment including fire and bilge pumps, and fixed fire-fighting apparatus. Deck equipment including windlass, ground-tackle, steering systems, and gasoline outboard engines.

Abide by all company safety protocols, watch-quarter station bill, and engine room standing orders, to ensure safety of all ship’s personnel and equipment. Maintain accurate logbooks and record keeping as per USCG, EPA, ABS and Port State Control regulations.

Maintain open and clear communication with the Chief Engineer and Captain, with regards to machinery status and engineering needs. Maintain accurate and adequate inventory of all engineering stores.

Oversee students as they are assigned to the engine room. Ensure that they are involved in safe and teachable operation and maintenance of ship’s systems.

Ensure a thorough and complete turnover with on-coming relief.

Supervisors
Reports directly to the Chief Engineer and Captain.

Qualification Requirements
Shipboard participation requires the physical ability and agility to quickly move and react to events on deck, to access below decks (ladders and companionways are provided), to climb aloft (ladders provided) and to live and work in confined spaces. Life at sea demands the physical, psychological and emotional ability to adapt to a ship's schedule, to work in groups or alone (sometimes in remote, un-monitored spaces), to withstand extended periods of time on a moving vessel without daily access to shore resources and in case of an emergency to perform emergency duties under adverse circumstances.

The Assistant Engineer's position requires the ability to work for extended periods in a confined space with extreme heat and noise during day and/or night hours and the ability to make repairs in areas with minimal access and working space. The position also requires the ability to maintain a safe environment while executing the details of directing and teaching the students.

Demonstrated ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of diesel engines, plumbing, electrical, electronic and refrigeration systems.

Ability to work in a professional and effective manner with both crew and students in a hierarchical education environment.

Willingness to teach both crew and students regardless of their previous engineering skills and experience.
