Overall Responsibilities

Provides and assists the Director of Marine Operations and Port Engineer with ongoing management and technical support of vessels owned or operated by SEA and reporting to the Captain of the SEA vessel. This position involves operating and maintaining the vessel at sea, in port, and during shipyard periods. Of equal importance is teaching our students, and others as appropriate, in proper operation of the vessel. Maintains a professional student/teacher relationship, which fosters the education program and community on board. Serves aboard assigned SEA vessel for contract term, scheduled under the direction of the Director of Marine Operations.

Primary Tasks
Operate, monitor, maintain, and repair as needed all ships machinery including but not limited to:

Main Engine, reduction gears and CPP. Generators and AC and DC electrical distribution. RO Water Makers and potable water systems. Fuel oil transfer system, bunkering, and storage. MSD, vacuum toilets, and wastewater systems. Refrigeration systems. Safety equipment including fire and bilge pumps, and fixed fire-fighting apparatus. Deck equipment including windlass, ground-tackle, steering systems, and gasoline outboard engines.

Abide by all company safety protocols, watch-quarter station bill, and engine room standing orders, to ensure safety of all ship’s personnel and equipment. Maintain accurate logbooks and record keeping as per USCG, EPA, ABS and Port State Control regulations.

Maintain open and clear communication with the Captain, Director of Marine Ops, and Port Engineer with regards to machinery status and engineering needs. Maintain accurate and adequate inventory of all engineering stores.

Oversee one assistant engineer. Supervise, teach, and delegate tasks in operation, maintenance, and repair of ship’s systems to this assistant.

Oversee students as they are assigned to the engine room. Ensure that they are involved in safe and teachable operation and maintenance of ship’s systems.

Ensure a thorough and complete turnover with on-coming relief.

Supervisors
On vessel: Reports directly to the Captain.

Ashore: Reports to Director of Marine Operations and Port Engineer

Qualification Requirements
Shipboard participation requires the physical ability and agility to quickly move and react to events on deck, to access below decks (ladders and companionways are provided), to climb aloft (ladders provided) and to live and work in confined spaces. Life at sea demands the physical, psychological and emotional ability to adapt to a ship's schedule, to work in groups or alone (sometimes in remote, un-monitored spaces), to withstand extended periods of time on a moving vessel without daily access to shore resources and in case of an emergency to perform emergency duties under adverse circumstances.

The Engineer's position requires the ability to work for extended periods in a confined space with extreme heat and noise during day and/or night hours and the ability to make repairs in areas with minimal access and working space. The position also requires the ability to maintain a safe environment while executing the details of directing and teaching the students.

Demonstrated ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of diesel engines, plumbing, electrical, electronic and refrigeration systems.

Ability to work in a professional and effective manner with both crew and students in a hierarchical education environment.

Willingness to teach both crew and students regardless of their previous engineering skills and experience.

An interest in SEA, its mission, and seeing it carried out wherever the ships sail.

CBMM Shipwrights restore, build and maintain traditional wooden vessels, while allowing full public access to the process. Skills desired:

3 to 6 years experience repairing, restoring, and constructing wooden vessels
Experience with hauling/moving vessels, lofting, layout, sawyering, joinery and the fabrication of quality traditional vessel construction components
Possess the knowledge and ability to identify and fabricate quality large timber products using treenails.
Crane and forklift experience, basic rigging and metal fabrication experience is a plus.
Must be comfortable building in full public view, being photographed and interviewed and interfacing and interpreting to patrons daily.

Position Summary:

Organizational Background

Rocking the Boat began as a boatbuilding afterschool project for high school students in the South Bronx and was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit in 2001. Today, the organization, with an annual budget of over $5 million, is a hub of youth development programming that serves nearly 5,000 community members annually across three locations. The mediums of boatbuilding, environmental science, and sailing are paired with social-emotional, academic, and career counselling by a team of licensed social workers to have profound and lasting impact on participants.

Position Summary

The Director of Boatbuilding coordinates all boatbuilding-related activities and infrastructure and manages all boatbuilding staff. This includes leading a series of year-round high school Boatbuilding Youth Development Programs, managing all wooden boatbuilding materials, tools, and equipment, and ensuring the regular maintenance and upkeep of Rocking the Boat’s fleet of wooden rowing and sailing boats. The position manages a full-time Boatbuilding Program Manager and Boat Maintenance Assistant, up to four part-time Program Assistants (alumni of the program), and up to 12 active program apprentices. The Director of Boatbuilding must be an experienced staff, shop, and project manager, technically skilled in wooden boatbuilding, and able to successfully teach students to become proficient wooden boatbuilders while integrating youth development methodology. Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, the position works roughly 12pm to 8pm during the 13 week-long spring and fall semesters and roughly 9am to 5pm throughout the rest of the year.

Responsibilities

Program Development and Execution: Ensuring the development, planning, management, and implementation of a comprehensive boatbuilding-based youth development and job readiness program

• Improves and ensures the successful delivery of the Boatbuilding Program curriculum centered on building and maintaining a fleet of wooden rowing and sailing boats

• Oversees the Boatbuilding Program Manager in recruiting ninth and tenth graders for the Student Boatbuilding Program and ensuring full enrollment of 16 students in each of three annual semesters

• Leads instruction of a Youth Development Boatbuilding Program for high school students

• Supports all boatbuilding-related components of middle school after-school and summer programs and other small group programs throughout the year

• Assesses participants’ individual achievement of a series of technical skills

• Incorporates principles of positive youth development in program planning and delivery

• Collaborates with other Program staff and Social Workers on program development and shared programming and training opportunities

• Develops and leads day and overnight trips designed to introduce participants to related professional opportunities

• Participates in monitoring and evaluation exercises designed to assess programmatic success

• Fulfills all programmatic content and schedule commitments to dedicated funding sources

Program Facilities, Equipment, and Safety: Ensuring that the physical resources are in place to provide safe and successful programming

• Provides ongoing management, sailing, and safety training for all Boatbuilding staff

Program Administration: Ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of information and data necessary to deliver successful programs

• Maintains accurate participant records including attendance, technical, academic, and social-emotional skill accomplishment and other information

• Supports the Development team with grant proposals, budgeting, and reporting requirements

• Assists in budget development and tracks program budget; sources and purchases needed materials and equipment within the parameters established in annual budgets; provides timely and accurate accounting of all expenses

Position Summary:

Technician apprentices are committed to working under the observation of a SHM Teammate building basic skills and taking on additional tasks and responsibilities as their skills advance. The Apprentice will learn how to inspect, maintain, and repair boats of all kinds. Using diagnostic equipment, test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment. They also install and test sanitation and refrigeration systems, electrical systems, steering gear, and accessories. 




Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Apprentices will rotate through various specialty services and can expect to learn and assist in performing skills specific to moving equipment
Assist with inspecting, maintaining, and repairing boats of all kinds
Learn how to utilize diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment
Assist installing and testing sanitation and refrigeration systems, electrical systems, steering gear, and accessories
Learn how to troubleshoot, test, repair, replace, remove and install vessel systems and components
Conduct thorough assessment prior to starting a job including; acknowledging the budgeted time and time frame for completion, proving the system and the element requiring service, sourcing parts if required
Willingness to learn  knowledge of marine systems including electrical, plumbing & water systems
Troubleshoot, repair, and install vessel systems and components including but not limited to: electrical, electronics, HVAC, plumbing & water systems (fresh, salt, and waste), gas and diesel engines
Assign parts and purchases to the appropriate vessels/tickets
Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines

Drafting customer update emails – detailing work progress.

Inspection of work – taking photos for updates and customer communication. Documenting work completed.

Research for estimates – looking over past jobs and finding material pricing to help Service managers complete detailed estimates.

Reviewing work orders – ensuring no detail has been missed.

Interfacing with customers – helping give that personal touch we are known for during customer pick ups and drop offs.

Riggers possess and develop a broad range of technical skills including: splicing; sail tuning; rigging for crane lifts; metal working, welding and eventually crane operation. The Rig Shop at Safe Harbor Great Island has greater capability then many yards. These capabilities include: weld repairs to masts; upgrades to Liesurefurl Booms; design and installation of sailing upgrades such as staysails and spinnaker sprit; and full mast replacements. The Rig Shop is a great place to develop and hone a wide variety of marine skills under the guidance of senior riggers with decades of experience.

Safe Harbor Great Island Systems Technicians will be trained through a combination of mentoring, ABYC courses and OEM Product Training to develop their knowledge of: maintenance procedures; installation application requirements and troubleshooting using both computer interfaces and diagnostic equipment such as multi-meters, refrigeration gauge sets, and product specific tooling.

 

Systems Technicians execute annual decommissioning and recommissioning procedures on the vessels stored at Safe Harbor Great Island.  These procedures are iPad based and guide the technician through the process while capturing critical data for the customer.

Execute boat commissioning and decommissioning procedures

Responsibilities:

Candidates will need to live locally in the Portland ME area and be able to report into the terminal within a reasonable time frame for emergency repairs, including after hours when needed.

Operate systems and equipment in accordance with procedures or as otherwise directed by the Port Engineer.

Be familiar with normal and emergency operating procedures for the steering gear, generators, bilge pump, and fire pump.

Become familiar with system and equipment emergency operating procedures.

Assist with Preventive Maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, approved modifications, and record keeping.

Conduct routine inspections.
