Position Title: Maritime Director
Compensation/Rate: $65,000 - $75,000 commensurate with experience
Location: Hull, MA
Position Summary:
HLM is much more than a museum, we are leaders in providing hands on experiential maritime learning for people of all ages. The Maritime Department conducts a comprehensive year-round schedule of educational programs, youth and adult club rowing, and several annual maritime events. As our dynamic maritime department grows and evolves, we have the need for a full time Maritime Director.

Reporting: The Maritime Director reports to the Executive Director
Maritime Director Position Duties and Responsibilities:
· Manage and grow existing maritime operations:
o Adult Rowing club
o Youth rowing for grades 7 – 12
o Monthly Veterans’ rowing program including adaptive rowing
o Volunteers who assist by functioning as coxswains, repairing and maintaining boats, assisting in running maritime events
o Museum’s 3,000 sq-ft boathouse
o Operate and maintain HLM’s fleet of rowing and powerboats in support of all maritime operations and for use as educational platforms
o Maritime staff presently consisting of a year-round, part time Boathouse Apprentice and additional summer maritime staff of 3 part time employees who assist in running summer programing. There is a possibility of adding staff as the department grows
· Boat repair, maintenance, and construction: (plywood, wood, epoxy)
o Guide local youths in school-based boat construction programs
o Work with volunteers and employees to maintain the fleet of vessels
· Event management: The Museum hosts several rowing races each year attracting as many as 70 boats of various sizes and up to 300 rowers.
· Ensure safety: For all people and equipment associated with the maritime operation
o Work with safety committee to review program and improve where necessary
o Ensure adherence to all applicable safety policies, regulations, and standards
· Raise funds for museum maritime programs and capital projects by participating in fund raising events, contributing to grant writing efforts, meeting with donors, etc.
· Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
· Experience in functional areas described above including people skills and maritime experience in and around Boston Harbor
· Bachelors’ degree and / or comparable experience
· USCG Master license, 25 tons or Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (Six Pack license)
· Boat maintenance / repair and building experience
· Must pass criminal background screening (Cori)
Maritime Director initial goals:
· Work toward significant growth of adult rowing club
· Work toward growth of school-based rowing days
· Create non-school based youth rowing program to take
· Expand the base of qualified coxswains within the adult rowing club
· Expand Summer Explorer Program
· Expand number of participants in rowing events and associated event activities
· Increase number of annual maritime events
· Manage Hull High School boat building program
Other Areas of Skill:
· Competent Operator of small powerboats
· Proficient in coastal navigation and piloting
· Function as rowing coxswain
· Organizing and running events
· Basic computer skills
· Professional level writing skills
· Experience in teaching and training in the many aspects of maritime skills
· Current First Aid / CPR certification (May be acquired after employment begins)
Other Information:
Salary range $65,000 - $75,000 commensurate with experience
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including some evenings, weekends, and holidays
The Maritime Director position is Exempt from FLSA requirements
