DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Expertly troubleshoot, diagnose and repair marine engines, transmissions and drivetrains, generators, stabilizers, electrical systems and electronics and common marine mechanical systems such as potable water systems and sanitation systems.

A Carpenter performs basic joinery, carpentry tasks on and off boats, following simple plans, blueprints, or patterns under close supervision of a team leader or supervisor. Often uses specialized equipment and adhesives to achieve desired results.


Previous experience with boats is a plus, but not required. If you have experience with hardwood floors, building cabinets, house carpentry, and interior trim, we will provide you with additional training!


The Carpenter:

Transfers dimensions to marine plywood and other construction materials using tape measure, square and marking/layout devices.
Makes accurate cuts of wood and other materials using table and chop saws and other related power tools.
Develops the ability to read and interpret blueprints.
May layout, cut and assemble boat parts, such as doors, paneling, boxes, rails, and trim.
Installs prefabricated/custom parts such as hatches, marine hardware, metal trim, seats and other parts.
Applies caulking compound under spray rails, windshields, and around windows, using appropriate material to specified lengths and cements, crimps, screws, or taps into place.
Develops understanding of complex woodworking joints and applies knowledge to task.
May be required to use epoxies and vinyl ester resins or other adhesives to bond parts together.
Uses reading and writing, adding and subtracting of whole numbers and fractions.
Follows defined instructions and procedures in performance of tasks.
Follows prescribed safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe, clean work area.
Performs all work to Hinckley quality standards.
Performs other related duties as necessary.

Requirements

High school or general equivalency degree (GED) required.
Course work in wood and/or metals preferred.
Knowledge and operation of tape measure, square, hand saw, hand plane, table saw, and chop saw, planer, joiner, router, band saw, shaper, surface sander.
0-3 years’ experience woodworking which may be attained on-the-job or through school, hobby, or construction.

Who We Are
The beginnings of the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-Op go back about 40 years. We are a full service boatyard with a talented crew, well-known for our traditional woodworking skills, from fine interior joinery on sail and motor yachts to major structural restoration on commercial fishing vessels. We design and install marine electronics and navigation systems, engines, propulsion, fuel and drive, heating, cooling, plumbing, steering, refrigeration and hydraulics, spars and rigging on steel, aluminum, fiberglass and wooden vessels. PTSC also specializes in new construction. Our business model is based on having cooperative owners manage our current staff of 40 plus employees, ensuring that each job has its own team of experts. In 2021, Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op acquired Carol Hasse’s sail loft, Port Townsend Sails.

What We Are Looking For
The Sailmaker is a valuable member of our experienced team of sailmakers and marine trade professionals. The typical tasks of a Sailmaker include preparing, selecting, measuring and cutting materials, sewing by hand and machine, and repairing existing sails. You will work in the sail loft of PT Sails at our facilities in the The Port Townsend Boatyard at the Port of Port Townsend.

Contributing to the success of the Sailmaker are attentive team work, detail orientation, speed, communication and collaboration skills, good eye-hand coordination, physical strength, mathematics including algebra and geometry, accuracy and patience, as well as comfort with manual and practical work.

What You Might Be Asked To Do
Prepare materials like creasing tapes, making sail ties, making labels
Practice sail making tasks like burning fabric, assembling patches, seaming samples, practicing sewing leathers, sewing rings
Remove and sew new covers, restitch seams, repair tears and conduct other sail repair tasks
Prepare materials for shipping, handle materials
Select and measure material, mark out and cut with scissors or power cutters
Sew on an industrial machine, and maintain said machines.
Install super rings, grommets, fasteners, and use hydraulic press, drill press, hack saw, hand held punches, mallet and stump
Hand sew portions of the sail using palm, needle and thread, awl, dremel and hot knife.
Survey and assess sails for potential repair work (for an advanced beginner)
Attend and be present in staff meetings
Other duties as assigned
