Position Title: Assistant Dockmaster
Compensation/Rate: Salary/Commensurate with Experience
JOB SUMMARY: The primary function of this position is to assist the Dockmaster to ensure a safe, well-organized and properly staffed waterfront experience for the BYC members and their guests. The Assistant Dockmaster functions include, but not limited to: hiring, training and scheduling waterfront staff; repair and maintenance of all waterfront assets; courteous and positive interactions with BYC members, guests, contractors, and the general public; and supervise all waterfront services in the absence of the Dockmaster.
JOB TASK:
1. Responsible for assisting the Dockmaster with all aspects of waterfront services and working with other managers, committee chairs, and club officers as needed.
2. Assisting with the hiring and training of all waterfront staff in accordance with the policies, procedures and needs of the Boston Yacht Club and in compliance with all local, state and federal rules and regulations.
3. Create and maintain a weekly schedule for all waterfront employees in compliance with the flow of business and departmental budget. The Assistant Dockmaster will be expected to report unexpected staffing changes/needs to Dockmaster in a timely manner.
4. Training of staff to include: how to interact with all members and guests in a courteous and professional manner; dress code; club rules and safety guidelines; boat and line handling; daily equipment maintenance and cleaning; fuel dock service and point of sale processing; transient vessel registration and billing; performance of colors and flag etiquette; VHF radio communication etiquette.
5. Performs routine inspections, maintenance and repairs on waterfront assets including: Launches, R/C vessels, Sonars, Optis, Whalers, Floats, Gangways, and all Hoists. The Assistant Dockmaster will update the Dockmaster about any ongoing R&M needs.
6. Assist in the securing of club assets during storms and waterfront closures including clearing and securing gangways and finger arms.
7. Assists in manages the Fuel System as directed by the Dockmaster but including the supervision of fuel dock attendants.
8. Assists with supervising the use of all hoists to ensure authorized and safe operation. Maintains a 3A license to the Boston Yacht Club’s compliance with state regulations of all hoist operations.
9. Assists in managing the use of Waterfront assigned spaces including: 13’ & 15’ Finger slips, Tie-up rings, Aluminum dinghy docks, Dinghy, Kayak & SUP storage racks, Dry Sail area and Winter Storage area.
10. Assists Race Committee as needed to prepare vessels for use with all necessary equipment for operation and safety.
11. Ensures the wearing of BYC designated Waterfront uniforms and any required safety gear by all employees in a neat, clean fashion without personal interpretation. 1
2. Assists with the transient mooring board and registrations; use of available moorings for members and Regattas or other special events.
13. Have a valid USCG Launch license and be available to cover launch shifts as needed.
REPORTS TO: Dockmaster
SUPERVISES: Assists the Dockmaster in the supervision of Launch Drivers, Dock Attendants, and Race Committee Drivers

EXPECTATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Valid U.S.C.G. Launch Operators License (needed upon employment) Valid 3A Massachusetts License for Hoist Operation (required within 3 months of employment at the employer’s expense) Knowledge of small diesel engine maintenance and repair Knowledge of marine 12vlt electrical systems Basic repair and maintenance skills including: woodworking, basic fiberglass repair, painting, and basic mechanical skills This position will work as needed on a weekly basis to ensure all responsibilities are met. Must be available to work weekends and holidays. Work demand will increase during in-season (mid-May thru mid-October). As a manager, this position must be on call for waterfront related emergencies. Physical demands include being required to stand for long periods and walk, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, stretch and twist or reach; Push, pull or lift up to 50 pounds; Continuous repetitive motions; Work in hot, humid and noisy environment
