Position Title: On Water Programming Supervisor
Compensation/Rate: $40,000 per year
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Position Summary:
Title: On-Water Programming Supervisor
Hours: Full-time (Wednesday through Sunday); ability to work evenings in peak season (late May through early September)
Reports to: Assistant Director of Workshop on the Water
Description: The On-Water Programming Supervisor is an ambassador for discovery, learning, recreation, and safety on the waterfront at Independence Seaport Museum. The On-Water Programming Supervisor primarily reports to the Assistant Director of the Workshop on the Water. The On-Water Programming Supervisor will supervise the dock staff and instruct additional staff for on-water programming, is responsible for meeting all waterfront safety expectations, following all waterfront procedures and enforcing all waterfront policies. The On-Water Programming Supervisor is someone who balances the fun of on-water/waterfront learning and the safety and procedures required of it. There is a natural seasonality to this position: busier in the summer months with programming and summer camps, and maintenance focused in the off-season when some duties will more heavily relate to the Workshop on the Water. As expected with outdoor-centric and seasonally specific positions, the On-Water Programming Supervisor should be able to work in both hot and cold weather conditions.
Qualifications:
• Experience with rowing, paddling, kayaking, or other on-water activities in a supervisory capacity required
• Experience developing and facilitating education programs or lessons required
• Experience Teaching, supervising or mentoring high school through college-aged students preferred
• Experience in incident-response or incident- management required
• Experience working on boat docks preferred
• First aid certification required (training will be provided)
• Small boat certification and lifesaving certification a plus
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
• Basic computer skills
• Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
• Ability to stand for long hours outdoors in the summer and winter weather
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• PA Child Abuse History Clearance and State Criminal Record Checks are required (Museum paid)
Essential Duties:
• Collaborate with staff and external partners to produce and/or individually produce on-water and boat shop programming for the public (i.e. Summer Camps, Kayak excursions, etc…)
• Hire, train, and supervise dock staff and/or programming staff during shifts and programs
• Assist with outreach efforts and represent the ISM in related collaborative groups to bring groups and visitors to the ISM docks and boat basin
• With the Education staff, co-develop lesson plans and educational activities that utilize ISM docks and boat basin
• Welcome and collaborate with visiting ships and other boats on the dock and the landing; assist with their docking and other needs
• Follow and ensure compliance with all waterfront policies, practices, and procedures in accordance with training and safety standards for visitors and staff
• Work with dock staff to teach visitors to safely operate their vessels; and properly fit them with personal floatation devices
• Respond to and document any incidents that occur during waterfront programming
• Communicate regularly with Assistant Director of Workshop on the Water and Communications staff about weather and/or safety related concerns
• Oversee and/or prepare boats for usage and end-of-day and end-of-season storage: pumped out, cleaned, and tied off properly
• Oversee and/or perform routine maintenance on docks and fleet throughout the year (both on-season and off-season)
• Ability to fill in for other education department areas as needed, particularly in the off-season
