We are seeking a part-time Woodworking Teacher (11-12.5 hours/week) to join our vibrant team for the summer of 2022. Our program runs eight weeks, Monday to Friday, starting June 27th and ends on August 19th. It is expected that teachers set up their room prior to the start of the program and are available for orientation the weekend of June 25th and 26th. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching children of a variety of ages and experience as a boat builder or wood craftsperson. Current teaching certification is a plus.

The class schedule is Tuesday and Thursday from 9 AM to 1:30 PM (Boat Building from 9 AM – 11 AM and Model Boat Making from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM), and Wednesdays from 9-10:30am and 10:30-12pm (weeks 1-8) with a third section from 12:30-2pm on weeks 3-6 (July 11-August5). Boat Building is designed for kids, ages 9+, to build a skiff over the course of the summer – with the understanding that it may not be fully completed by the end of the season. Model Boat Building is designed as a class where kids will build their own model boat within the weekly class. The Wednesday classes are for ages 7-10 and focus on small woodworking tasks (birdhouses, back scratchers, etc) that can be completed in a single 1.5 hour session. Class sizes are small and we strive to incorporate our beautiful surroundings into the content of classes as often as possible.

Position Summary:

Boatbuilder/Restorer
Tumblehome Boatshop is seeking an experienced boatbuilder, or graduate of a boatbuilding program, to help with the restoration and construction of fine wooden boats. Applicant must be able to help with framing, planking, joinery and finishing. Knowledge of marine fasteners, adhesives, bedding compounds, and typical wood species used boatbuilding is essential. Experience with metalworking and fabrication is a plus for us. Knowledge of shop safety and tool use is essential.


Requirements
o Education in wooden boatbuilding and restoration, minimum 1 year program, or a minimum of 4 years experience in the trade of building and restoring wooden boats.
o Familiarity with a range of wooden boat construction, both traditional and modern methods. The more experience with a range of construction types, the better.
o The ability to work within a team is essential, learning our methods but also sharing knowledge.
o Applicant must communicate and work well with others.
o Applicant must be able to communicate well with our clients and public.

Position Summary:

Wooden Boat Building Instructor Job Description. Full Time
Instructors:
● Collaborate with Executive Director and fellow instructor/s to assist designing programs
and curriculums for 4 month apprenticeship
● Facilitate a progression of lessons related to basic woodworking skills, boat building
skills and restoration skills
● Provide excellent customer service, invoicing, and bidding for clients with assistance
from ED.
● Meet boat building goals provided by Executive Director
● Help oversee daily work of apprentices
● Mentor and provide feedback to apprentices
● Facilitate community experiences for apprentices
● Assist with maritime related instruction
● Participate in the application process of future apprentices
● Communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with Executive Director and fellow
instructors
● Collaborate with Executive Director and fellow instructor/s to create volunteer
opportunities and outreach for apprentices

Instructors are expected to foster a community environment that teaches respect, responsibility, service to others and personal growth. The instructors are supported by the Executive Director.


Responsibilities:
● Teach woodworking, boat building, shop safety and restoration skills
● Assist boat shop volunteers
● Assist teaching sailing, rowing and seamanship skills
● Advise apprentices on personal and interpersonal skills
● Participate in extracurricular activities; sailing, field trips, etc.
● Assist coordinating community service projects
● Assist coordinating weekly chores with apprentices
● Help facilitate island solos
● Participate in the apprentice interview process by assisting with interviews and on
campus visits
● Collaborate with all staff to facilitate experience of visiting future apprentices.
● Attend staff meetings
● Assist with ordering wood and shop supplies
● Maintain, sharpen, and repair tools and machinery
● Lead, participate and role model contemplative time
● Participate in on campus projects and facilities projects led by Executive Director
● Participate in building boats for the purpose of sale when appropriate
● Teach open enrollment classes in woodworking and boat building when the
apprenticeship is not in session

Compensation package: Starting annual salary of $30,000. Will be reviewed annually.

Room and board: All housing expenses (including utilities) are provided for by the Boat Shop and all meals are provided every weekday (except for holidays and scheduled breaks).

Health Insurance: 100% provided

Pension Plan: 14% of salary

Vacation: You will have 20 vacation days, in addition to scheduled breaks through the year, as well as all Federal Holidays celebrated by the Boat Shop.

Continuing Education: You will be provided with reasonable opportunities for continuing education and professional development. All such opportunities are subject to approval by the Executive Director.

This position reports to the Executive Director.
