Boatwright: Marine Manufacturing Group

Employer: Marine Manufacturing Group

Email Address: mycareer@tartanlegacy.com

Position Title: Boatwright

Compensation/Rate: $18 to $35 / hour

Location: Painesville, OH

Position Summary: LOOKING FOR A CAREER IN BOATBUILDING? If so, you might go to work in a small shop, turning out a boat or two per year, where you can pick up a broad range of skills – albeit at a snail's pace and over a long period of time. Or you might go to work at a large boat factory, where they turn out several hundred units per year, where you can hone a narrow set of skills while attending to your own minor part of the production process. But if you're looking for a career — not just a job in boatbuiding — you should talk to us. Because at the Marine Manufacturing Group, we don't just build boats, we build careers — and dreams.

We are presently looking for workers in all trades and crafts, from shipwrights and carpenters to FRP techs, marine mechanics, electricians, riggers, and painters. And we are actively recruiting at all skill levels, from entry to journeyman, leads, and forepersons. We prefer to hire people who want more than just a job, people who want to establish a career and a future in boat building, and who also want to be proud of and respected for the work they do. With MMG, you will gain hands-on industry experience in both the more traditional aspects of boat building, as well as in the application of fully modern composite techniques, including those of advanced carbon-fiber technology. At MMG, you will also find emergent opportunities in project and supply-chain management, even marine-engineering and yacht design. The Marine Manufacturing Group is an owned subsidiary of Seattle Yachts International.

Company: At MMG, our operation has a history of more than 60 years building Tartan and Legacy yachts from 26’ to 55’, both sail and power, as well as AMP carbon fiber masts and other high-tech boat parts. The MMG senior management team boasts nearly two centuries of combined accumulated boat building experience, in everything from dinghies to luxury megayachts. And our trades and craftspeople strive constantly to be among the best in the industry. MMG is currently expanding operations at its "new" 120,000 sf facility in Painesville, Ohio, which is less than 4 miles and ten minutes from the shore of western Lake Erie and less than half an hour from Cleveland, central to the Great Lakes and to both coasts of the U.S.

Location Details: Our manufacturing facility is located in the city of Painesville. The surrounding Lake County area is well known for its parks and preserves and outdoor recreational activity from sailing and boating to hunting and fishing. Nearby Cleveland affords Lake County residents access to the amenities of a larger city, such as a major international airport and all manner of educational and cultural opportunities. Lake County and the surrounding area offers several advantages to those who would like to put down roots and raise a family. The general cost of living in the area is relatively low — at 20% less than the U.S. national average — and an average cost for housing that is more than 35% lower than the national average.

Benefits: We are an equal-opportunity employer who offers excellent wages well above the national average, plus a solid benefits package which includes an employer-subsidized healthcare plan, generous paid vacation and personal leave time, and an employer-matched 401k retirement savings plan. We also offer skills-improvement and industry-related training and ongoing technical education programs, and tuition-reimbursement for those who take industry-relevant post-secondary courses at nearby colleges and technical schools. In many cases, we help with relocation expenses. And we've recently launched a program to help our employees locate and lease or purchase long-term, comfortable housing in Lake County and the surrounding area, where a very reasonable cost of living helps younger families grow and thrive.

Apply: To find out more or, better yet, to arrange for an initial telephone interview, contact MMG General Manager, Phil Friedman, directly. Either email phil@seattleyachts.com or call 1.440.392.2628. Today could be the start of your new career in boatbuilding…
