The Role

Marine Systems Instructor at The Landing School

Position: This is a full-time, permanent position under the direct supervision of the Dean of Education, hired by the President of the School.

 

Objective: The Marine Systems program teaches the skills and knowledge necessary to install, maintain and repair today’s increasingly complex boat systems using established industry standards. The curriculum also serves as an effective preparation for those students seeking American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) marine systems certification.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:  In fulfillment of the objectives, the  Marine Systems Instructor will:

  • Continue to develop and improve the curriculum and all teaching materials

  • Work directly with students, with primary  responsibility for lectures, demonstrations, bench work, practice applications, and yacht quality installations and repairs of marine systems in customer boats

  • Assist students in learning individually, in small groups and as a class through clear communication; patient, understanding, approach; thorough and professional knowledge; mature leadership; and positive, honest academic advice

  • Evaluate student learning through questioning, homework, practical and theoretical testing, and certifying exams

  • Share in the administrative tasks of the development and successful operation of the program, as assigned by the Dean of Education

  • Demonstrate, teach, and enforce shop safety requirements and procedures

  • Continue to develop skills and knowledge pertinent to teaching and current marine industry practices

• Working with volunteers and other staff to manage our shop and programs.
Essential Job Functions

• Serve as the relationship manager for one partner school.
• Teach the CBB curriculum to the entire 5th grade class of one school over the course of a school year – boat building occurs throughout the school year in teams of 6 and is the largest educational component. In addition to boat building, this teacher will also be responsible for supervising rowing lessons, arranging swimming lessons, leading an inquiry-based marine science project, designing an oral history project, and facilitating program evaluation.
• Work with additional grades on smaller educational initiatives.
• Aid in occasional promotional events like the New England Boat Show or fundraising events;
• In concert with rest of CBB staff, help ensure space is clean and safe, tools are maintained, items are organized, and layout is conducive to learning and working;
• Bring new ideas to the table – in concert with ED explore curriculum ideas, educational partners and new initiatives;
• Assist shop manager with volunteer management when working in the CBB shop;
• Monitor resource deployment between shop and school in terms of tools, materials, etc.;

Qualifications
• Strong background in education, preferably working with 10-12 year olds. Experiential education experience and teaching credentials preferred but not required. 
• General handiness and comfort in a workshop environment. It is not necessary that the applicant be an expert boat builder but comfort with tools and their uses strongly desired. 
• Working knowledge of Social-Emotional Learning concepts and their application in an active setting. 
• Flexibility. CBB is a dynamic environment with a small staff. Ability to adjust focus to highest-priority tasks is highly valued.
• Strong interpersonal relationship and communication skills. This teacher will be responsible for maintaining relationships with school administration, teachers, students and communicating plans and progress back to CBB’s ED.
